Life Catastrophes - Why Me God?
God allows trials in our lives not to impair us,
but to improve us.
Scripture Reading: Job 38:1-4
Job 38:4
Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.
On March 1, 1997, a series of tornadoes swept through Arkansas, killing twenty-six people and resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in damage. To protect disaster victims, the Arkansas legislature passed a bill that would bar insurance companies from canceling the coverage of storm victims, and sent the bill to Governor Mike Huckabee for his signature. To the surprise of the legislators, however, the governor refused to sign it, objecting to one phrase in the bill. The New York Times reported, "Mr. Huckabee said that signing the legislation would be violating my own conscience inasmuch as it described a destructive and deadly force as being 'an act of God'.....He suggested that the phrase 'acts of God' be changed to 'natural disasters.''' In a letter to the legislators who drafted the bill, Governor Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, explained, "I feel that I have indeed witnessed many 'acts of God', but I see His actions in the miraculous sparing of life, the sacrifice and selfless spirit in which so many responded to the pain of others. Insurance companies have traditionally referred to any natural disaster as an act of God. Who is right? Such disasters highlight one of the central dilemmas of this life. The bible portrays God as perfect both in love and in power, yet bad things happen. From our finite and limited perspective, this is a mystery we may never understand in this life.
Why God may be one of the most popular, and toughest questions asked by a Christian when they are going through a situation that may feel unfair, difficult , or brings about emotional pain. We all experience emotional pain or some difficult circumstance at some point in our lives. Many times the emotional pain that we go through may cause us to want to give up spiritually. We become consumed with Why. We feel cheated or that we are undeserving of this calamity. Job experienced the same dilemma. Everyone had the answers to Job circumstances, but did they really know or were they assuming. The challenges or emotional pain that we face is not always about us, but to bring others to the knowing power of Jesus Christ. The difficulty at times is in accepting something without understanding why. When we do come to an acceptance and believe we can begin to experience the miracle of our lives. Life is not always about us, but others living, and struggling around us. God's glory can shine in any circumstance, and reach the darkest places in the world. We begin to receive an inward healing that comes through faith and trust in the plan and will of God once we stop asking God to change the outside, and work on the inside. God never did tell Job why, but He asked Job questions that redirected his faith, and trust to how great, mighty, and majestic God truly is. In Joshua 1:5 God tells Joshua that He will never leave nor forsake him, but He didn't say that he wouldn't go through any difficult circumstance or emotional pain. God works through our pains to share His love and ministry to others.

The mere knowledge of religious truth "without" an honest attempt at translating it into action and putting it into practice, will not profit a person very much.
